Love this! I too was so happy to see it survived! What a great way to memorialize it.

Anne Gifford replied:

Thank you Lyle. Hopefully it will be here for many years to come!

How wonderful that this historic building survived. Last summer's fires took a lot of beautiful places, even as far as Central Texas. For a time I could look up from my home and see a plume of smoke coming from every direction. Ours were not as bad as yours, but the threat is always there during a drought. I think you are right about the spirit children protecting the school!

Anne Gifford replied:

I appreciate your comment and your thoughts about the guardian children, Marsha. The fires are scary.

I too so wanted the school to avoid the horrific flames and it did. I’m going with your version of why it was protected. Amazing, creative, powerful painting Anne.

Anne Gifford replied:

Thank you Kathy. I like knowing you think the same way.

Artist's Description

RECESS AT THE CHERRYVALE SCHOOLHOUSE
As we drove through what used to be Old Marshall two days after the fire, I held my breath. PLEASE let it be there. Rounding the corner, I anxiously glanced towards the hillside. There it was, still standing....the queen of Cherryvale road. Tears of relief filled my eyes. The burn line made a ring around the iconic Cherryvale schoolhouse, right up to the fence surrounding the property. How on earth did it survive? My mom and I believe it was saved by the school children playing ring around the rosy in the front yard.

This is the presentation for the ten paintings, corresponding post-fire photos, and text that explains the backstory behind the art, as they appear in my art show "A Tribute to Marshall: A Journey Through Healing". My Marshall exhibition will be shown in various venues in and around Boulder, Colorado in the coming months. Above is the text included with the photo.

About Anne Gifford

Anne Gifford

Anne Gifford is an award winning artist and the eight time poster artist for Colorado's Bolder Boulder 10K Memorial Day Race, one of the largest road races in the United States. She began her career as a silkscreen artist. After 25 years of printmaking, Anne now works with watercolor, building successive layers of color to create her vibrant, rich, and detailed paintings. She has lived in Colorado since 1976 and finds inspiration in the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Her paintings, like a pictorial journal, have chronicled her journey thus far. On her many walks and hikes throughout the area, she is always on the lookout for new imagery. She relishes the depiction of a magic moment and the evidence she finds of the pulse of life,...
